Gmail announced today that it has been in service for 5 years today.  Last time I checked it still bears the BETA tag, google being one of the greatest software houses in the world but they still can’t fix the bugs with Gmail?  Or are they holding themselves to too high a standard.

Earlier this week Silicon Graphics was purchased by Rackable systems for 25mill.  It also looks like Sun will be gobbled up to the tune of 7 Billion next week by IBM and Twitter the social tool could be purchased by Google.  Recessions are very interesting times!

Really interesting read on what Google data centers are comprised of.

Google’s big surprise: each server has its own 12-volt battery to supply power if there’s a problem with the main source of electricity. The company also revealed for the first time that since 2005, its data centers have been composed of standard shipping containers–each with 1,160 servers and a power consumption that can reach 250 kilowatts.

I wish they had this while I was in University for instant messenger and email, now I just wish I had it for my cell phone and most importantly the words that come out of my mouth!

What is Mail Goggles?  Mail goggles kicks in in the wee hours of the night and has you answer 5 math questions before it allows you access to send an email.  So when you’re inebriated your disgust of math will save you, GENIOUS!

You can also edit it to work at a certain times of the day so for example between 10pm and 4am.

Surely though it’s easier to turn it off rather than to answer the math questions?  Possibly the settings are also guarded by the questions.
